Betty Berring and Vivian Young


Former columnists for Practical Homeschooling Magazine.

In 1986, after five years of struggling with public and parochial schools, Betty began homeschooling her four children. To ensure a smooth transition into college for her children with every opportunity afforded entering freshmen, she researched every aspect of higher education.

By the grace of God, after a personal two-year battle with the state government, she and her husband were able to secure the Missouri Bright Flight Scholarship for their son Nicholas and other qualified homeschool graduates.

Betty has since offered guidance on college entrance and scholarship requirements by writing articles, conducting a workshop, and giving personal support to other homeschooling families.


After teaching both daughters to read before age five and working with their teachers to provide supplementary material for them, Vivian, with the encouragement and help of her husband, homeschooled the girls after fifth and third grades. Grateful to the Lord for guidance in meeting deadlines, one daughter entered college with a National Merit Scholarship and the other entered later with a Missouri Bright Flight Scholarship. Based on her experiences, Vivian started writing articles, giving occasional speeches, and counseling others on college admission requirements.
